2nd scare in a week: Plane's hydraulic problem creates concern at Gulfport airport
GULFPORT -- Emergency crews responded to the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport on Thursday after an inbound plane reported hydraulic problems.
Gulfport police Sgt. Damon McDaniel said the police department's airport division was on the scene with other rescue personnel, but the plane landed safely.
American Airlines Flight 3424 from Dallas was due to arrive at 1:45 p.m. It landed at 2:12 p.m.
Police, fire, rescue and ambulance crews were waiting as a precaution.
"Other than stopping on the runway and being towed to the gate to let passengers off, it was an uneventful flight," said Jim Foster, airport assistant executive director.
The three-person crew and 42 passengers were not harmed.
Mechanics began checking the plane. Its 2:15 p.m. flight out was delayed.
It was the second time in a week first responders have been scrambled for a potential problem with an airplane. On Friday, a United Airlines plane's tire blew as it was taking off for Houston, and its pilot returned and circled the airport several times but landed the aircraft safely.
"I've been here 14 years and I don't remember the last time we had two incidents come up in such a short time frame," Foster said.
"We have four of the major legacy carriers and Vision Airlines, and they all have outstanding safety records, maintenance facilities and staff. These are very unusual events, but we activated our emergency plan and it worked out well. It could be years and years before it happens again."
About 800,000 passengers a year use the airport. US Airways and Delta Airlines also fly out of the airport.
