After replaced a hydraulic cylindrical piston, elevator working again at Somerset Town Hall
SOMERSET —Elevator operations have returned to Town Hall after an eight-month hiatus.
The need for repairs to the old lift — to the tune of about $43,000 — left the building without handicapped accessibility for meetings and other purposes since November.
"The elevator is now up and running and passed inspection at Town Hall," Town Administrator Dennis Luttrell said, reporting the good news at Wednesday night's Board of Selectmen meeting at the town library, its temporary meeting place.
The repairs by BBE Corp. of Salem were completed around 11 a.m. that morning.
Selectmen will return to the first-floor conference room at Town Hall for their next scheduled meeting. Luttrell said he'd notify Bonnie Mendes, the library director, of the board's intention to return to its regular space. He thanked the staff for its hospitality.
Chairman Donald Setters said there were occasional time constraints, because the library closes at 8 p.m.
"I'm kind of looking forward to going back to the old meeting room," he said.
Meeting plans for other town boards have not yet been made.
"They've been all over the place: the police station, the Council on Aging," said Assistant Town Clerk Kathleen Maiato, whose office posts the meetings on the outdoor message board at Town Hall.
"Everybody should be moving back here," she said.
Luttrell said that once the bid was awarded, the work took about 2½ weeks. Appropriating the funds at a scheduled town meeting caused most of the delays, he said.
The work included replacing a hydraulic cylindrical piston, and the contractor also relaced a switch and a valve in the control room, Luttrell said. The valve replacement added about $5,000 to the cost.
Also on Wednesday night, selectmen delayed choosing a firm to enter negotiations for building a solar farm on Wilbur Street. Three applications are under review for a combination of tax and lease revenue and energy savings for the town.
Selectmen also discussed modifying the fee structure at the town transfer station, and modifying Building Inspector Joel Reed's office hours to expedite his 26-hour work week.
All three issues are on tap for Wednesday night's selectmen's meeting at 6 p.m. at Town Hall.
